An ARTumentary of Women of Color

Conceptualized & Directed by Briena Crawford

Briena Crawford presents what she calls an artumentary (documentary made of solely forms of art) encasing the mind of Women of Color living in America today, through a glitchy digital walk through the woods. She collaborates with poets, dancers, photographers, cinematographers and clothing brand owners of color to not only support their craft and business, but to offer exposure to DMV Creators and artists. This 5 part concept video series both boldly and subtly address liberal topics like colorism, racism, beauty standard, modern dating/hook up culture, feminism and self love/care dedicated to women of color. Using SZA's CTRL album as the main inspiration, she pairs a track to one of the corresponding chapters to convey a message. The Audience being a tour guide through the development of todays women of color.

Prelude

Living in Color: An ARTumentary of Women of color (Series)

The first of five installments of the ARTumentary Living in COLOR is finally released on the creator's birthday! After 6 long months, Crawford takes the audience on a glitchy digital walk through a woman of color's psyche which is metaphorically represented by the forest, while also tying into SZA's CTRL album theme. This prelude alludes mostly to the first chapter, but also to the rest of the project. She subtly and boldly sheds light on liberal topics like racism, feminism, colorism, self love, mental health and lots more.

Cultivate

Living in Color: An ARTumentary of Women of Color

â€” This chapter represents a Woman of Color’s youth; where the seeds of influence are planted in the mind by society that steers them away from true happiness, self discovery and self worth. Here, lies her origin. Her early end of childhood. A time where she only knows what she sees and what she is told. A time where she is riddled with questions. Crawford addresses topics like stereotypes, colorist, bullying, sexual assault, early trauma and corruption.

Vanity

Living in Color: An ARTumentary of Women of Color

— This chapter represents a Woman of Color’s rise into adulthood; where her confidence is at a all time high; fully accepting and embracing the skin she is in and flaunts her ability to know her worth and shield herself from similar pains she felt in her childhood/early youth. This is where she has learned and realized the beauty of her ethnicity and that society cannot hurt her that way anymore. Seemingly sure of herself and how to live her life from here on out.

Dispirit

Living in Color : An Artumentary of Women of Color

- Her "Fall". The low that she had tried so hard to avoid. The second obstacle that is bigger than the first. This is where she doubts herself twice as hard as before. Probably because of a form of rejection heartbreak, racism, colorism, neglect, etc. This is where she has to question everything she knows and overcome barriers bigger than herself.

Resilience

Living in Color : An Artumentary of Women of Color

— The final chapter represents the phoenix reminiscent moment a woman experiences after being at her lowest of lows. A time where she can look at her scars and smile at her strength instead of seeing them as weakness.
